SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
One of the beautiful things about salvation is that you can know if you are saved. In the letter of 1 John, he writes combating a false belief, that in order to have salvation you just need to know about Christ. This idea is still around today and I have met many people that believe this. They “know” about Christ, church, sins, heaven and hell, and salvation; but they do not have a relationship with God and the Holy Spirit in their lives guiding them.
In 1 John we find five topics to help you determine if the Holy Spirit lives in you, and if you are saved First; do I enjoy worshipping God (1 John 1:3-4)? You know what things you like to do; food you eat, movies you watch, music you listen to, and the kind of friends you have. We are meant to have joy in our relationship with our creator. Does worshiping God with your life bring you delight?
Second; do you have awareness of your sin (1:7-10)? Living in habitual sin is not a mark of a believer. John states that if we tell God we are not sinning when we are, we are calling God a liar. God knows we sin, but it is the process of getting rid of the sin and acting more like our savior that brings us closer to God.
Third; do we read his Word and obey his commandments (2:1-6)? If we are to act like Christ, then we need to know what he says about how to act, and those instructions only come in the Bible. How can a person say they are a Christian and yet not read the one book that tells them how to be like one? You can’t.
Fourth; do you love other Christians and desire to be with them (3:10-17)? Another mark of a believer and someone who has the Holy Spirit in their life is their love for other Christians. John gives us an example of love, giving to other Christians when they are in need selflessly. Christ gave of his life without benefit of his own, and that is how we are to love others.
Last; do you display the fruits of the Spirit (4:13)? The purpose for God’s whole plan of salvation and plan since the creation of the world is for you to have a relationship with him, and because you have that relationship and are implanted with the Holy Spirit, we can now act like Christ. Paul gives us a great list of the behaviors a Christian should have in Galatians 5. Does that list of attributes look like you?
If there is any doubt of your faith, please talk to your minister or you can come talk to me. I would love to talk with you about the life changing relationship you can have with God.
