SHELBYVILLE, IL. — UPDATE -- From the Illinois State Police
HERRICK, IL- On December 29, 2011 at approximately 7:21 p.m., the Christian County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a rural Herrick resident. The caller advised a male subject was in his yard armed with a firearm. The call was transferred to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and deputies were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival and preliminary investigation, deputies located a deceased male approximately ½ mile from the scene. Soon after, Shelby County Sheriff Michael Miller contacted Illinois State Police Zone 5 Investigations requesting assistance.
An autopsy was completed today in Springfield indicating the preliminary cause of death as “multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.” The victim has been identified as Jeremy S. Morgan, age 25, of Herrick, IL.
As a result of the investigation, two suspects were developed. With assistance from the United States Marshals Services, both were located and taken into custody. Michael L. Pease, age 22, of Pana, IL and Wayne D. Newlin, age 52, of Herrick, IL were arrested for First Degree Murder and incarcerated in the Shelby County Jail. The investigation is pending and no further information will be released by the Illinois State Police at this time.

THE PUBLIC IS REMINDED THAT CRIMINAL DEFENDANTS ARE PRESUMED INNOCENT UNTIL THE GOVERNMENT IS ABLE TO PROVE ITS CHARGES IN COURT BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT.
