Easter Date Changes Annually

Ask the Pastor

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — By Chase Smith

Why does the date of Easter change from year to year?

Many holidays we celebrate have a certain date they fall on. Christmas is December 25, Independence Day is July 4th, and even Thanksgiving, while is not always on the same day, we know it is the fourth Thursday in November. Why is it that each year Easter can range from March 22nd to April 25th?

The calendar we use is based on the Hebrew calendar that Christ grew up with. In the Gospels, where the story of Jesus is recorded, it says that Jesus was put to death in conjunction with the celebration of Passover, which also varies from year to year. It was decided hundreds of years after Christ’s death, burial, resurrection, and then ascension into heaven to set a time to celebrate his sacrifice for our sins. Godly men decided that it would be the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox (the first day of spring). This year spring begins on March 20th, the first full moon after that date is April 18th, a Monday, therefore Resurrection Sunday, or Easter, is on the 24th.

The date is not what we should focus on, but it is importance of what Christ did on that day. We celebrate his sacrifice on the cross, taking the weight of our sins, his dying on Friday and rising on Sunday morning, and giving us a way to have a relationship with God.
