4-Hers learn to decorate cakes

Nine Shelby County 4-H members learned about cake decorating skills from Carrie Downs from Moweaqua of the Cake and Candy Connection.

Members first baked a cake and learned about using leveling strips while baking. One cake used the leveling strip and another cake was baked without the strip. 4-H members saw firsthand the leveling strip kept the cake level while the cake baked without had a crown. Members learned this is important when making stacked cakes.

Members also iced and decorated their own cupcakes. For exhibiting at the fair, beginner members need to exhibit a cake or cupcake with four basic techniques. Carrie demonstrated some skills and then members practiced and decorated their own cupcakes.

Members received four cake decorating tips and a couple of icing bags, which were donated by the Cake & Candy Connection and Shelby County Federation, to take home with them so they would have them to use for their 4-H projects.

Thanks to Carrie Downs for all her help and expertise.
