Shelby County 4-H holds aerospace workshop

Shelby County 4-H held an Aerospace Workshop on June 24, 2014 at the 4-H Center. Members built the “Big Betty Rocket”. Big Betty is a skill level 1 kit for beginner modelers. There were ten members in attendance. The rocket workshop was led by Jim Sparks of Shelbyville. Jim retired this past school year from Mattoon High School. Jim has been conducting the rocket workshop for several years assisting 4-H’ers in rocket building.

At the end of the workshop, 4-H’ers went home with an assembled rocket that needs to be painted and then will be ready for the fair. 4-Her’s then went outside and watched Jim launch the Big Betty rocket that he had built for the workshop. A big thanks to Jim for his time building the sample rocket and helping the kids build some great rockets. Special thanks to Nick Shaw, 4-H member from Shelby Showstoppers and Ryan Creamer, 4-H Dad for helping members with assembly questions.

Aerospace projects will be judged on Monday, July 14 at the Shelby County 4-H & Jr. Fair. Rockets will be launched at the conclusion of the judging approximately 12:30 p.m.
