Eastern Illinois University’s School of Continuing Education has chosen Dr. Roger Whitlow as the recipient of the Philanthropist of the Year Award. Dr. Whitlow was honored at the Adult Student Recognition Ceremony and Reception held on April 28. Dr. Whitlow was chosen for this award for his initiation and funding of the new Bachelors of Arts in General Studies (BGS) Degree Completion Fund at EIU.
Dr. Whitlow explained that during his time in teaching adult students, all too often he had seen students who were within one or two courses of finishing their degree, but who had exhausted their financial resources. Some would have to wait a year or more to build up their funds to complete their degree, and some were simply never able to finish at all.
Dr. Whitlow, who, over the years, assisted many of these students himself, said that with his career nearing a close, he wanted to establish a permanent grant program for such students — students in their middle years, who, with their degree can often realize substantial new opportunities in their lives.
