Becca Wheeler, a student at Shelbyville High School, won the third place award for her essay on Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables.
She was one of five high school students within a 200-mile radius of Eastern Illinois University to be honored with the title of “Phi Beta Kappa Young Scholar” by the Phi Beta Kappa Association of East Central Illinois, which recognizes promising young scholars in the region. Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest and most prestigious honor society in the United States.
Becca is the first Shelbyville student in the last ten years to receive an award. She was nominated by teacher Kathy Niestradt. She won $50 and her choice of a book.
