Wilbur Braughton Unit 611 of the American Legion Auxiliary has chosen Kaitlin Arlene Slifer and Kristina Michelle Beitz as delegates to this year’s session of the ALA Illini Girls State.
Due to the enthusiastic response from the girls desiring to attend Girls State and the limited available funds of our unit, two other delegates from Stewardson-Strasburg High School are being sponsored by other Auxiliary Units. Those girls are Hannah Autumn McDonald, sponsored by the Shelbyville Auxiliary Unit, and Casey Lee Wheat, sponsored by the Windsor Auxiliary Unit.
Illini Girls State (IGS) is a government simulation patterned after the State of Illinois. This is the 74th session of IGS and approximately five hundred girls from various communities throughout the state will attend IGS at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston June 15-21.
Kaitlin Slifer is the daughter of Jeff and Sharon Slifer of rural Stewardson. Kristina Beitz is the daughter of Matt and Heather Beitz of rural Stewardson. Hannah McDonald is the daughter of Tim and Catherine McDonald of Mode. Casey Wheat is the daughter of Joe Wheat of Stewardson.
All four girls have met the requirements to be considered as delegates for IGS, which are leadership, citizenship, good character, cooperation, maintaining a C average, and are currently completing their Junior yer of High School. The program is physically strenuous as well as intellectually challenging. The girls will give a report of their week at IGS at the Shelby County Council Legion and Auxiliary meeting at the Stewardson Post Home on June 23 at 7 p.m.
