Stew-Stras baseball tripped up the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes on Monday with a 6-2 home victory.

Luke Rincker went the distance for the complete-game win. He allowed just two runs, seven hits in seven innings, walked only one batter and struck out four.

The Comet defense gave him great support, making 17 of the 21 outs and not committing a single error behind him. The only error was Rincker’s and it didn’t cost him.

Steven Thomas and Gabe Wascher were the hit leaders on Monday. Thomas, the lead-off man, went 2-for-4, getting back-to-back hits in the fifth and sixth and scoring both times. Thomas had the only extra base hit for the Comets, an RBI double. Wascher was 2-for-3, driving in the first run of the game and then singling and scoring in the 3-run sixth.

While the Comets only out-hit Teutopolis 8 to 7, the Comet hits were timely. T-Town scattered their hits except in the second when they scored both their runs, while the Comets put their hits together.

Jaden Widdersheim, the reigning Daily Union Athlete of the Week, went 1-for-2 on Monday and singled to lead off the Comet second. With to outs, Justin Mechling, who threw a 1-hitter on Saturday, drew a walk to keep the inning alive. Wascher then came to the plate and singled Widdersheim home, 1-0.

T-Town took a lead in the fourth with two runs. Alex Ritz led off with a single, but was out on the base paths. Jake Koester doubled, then scored on a wild pitch. The next batter, Markus Gillespie doubled and went to third. A sac fly by Luke Bushur made it 2-0 Teutopolis.

The Comets came back in the fifth with two runs to reclaim the lead they never lost again. Thomas singled and Clayton Brandt sac flied him to third. With two outs, Rincker singled, Widdersheim walked and Kyle Helmuth singled.

Leading 3-2 in the sixth, Rincker allowed a lead-off runner on a throwing error, then the next three batters flew out.

In the Comet sixth, Stew-Stras put some distance between them and the Shoes, who were facing their last at bat. Mechling drew a lead-off walk and Wascher hit his second single. With one out, Thomas doubled a run home. Wascher scored on a wild pitch, then Thomas scored on a wild pitch, 6-2.

Rincker allowed another lead-off single in the Shoe seventh, but rang up the next batter. A pop up to Brandt behind the plate and a pop up to Widdersheim at short secured the win.

Stew-Stras (3-1), on a 3-game winning streak, were set to start a 3-game road trip on Wednesday. They were to play at South Central on Wednesday, at Okaw Valley on Friday, then at Sullivan on Monday, with a fresh-soph away game at Effingham on Thursday.
