Main Event to Be Held Tonight

VALORIE EVERSOLE - Daily Union Staff Writer

Come one, come all to the Main Event! It’s a Beach Party!

For over 10 years Main Street School has held a carnival-like event and raised extra funds for school activities.

“We use the money for extra projects the teachers want to do in the classroom or for an extra field trip,” said Main Street School Principal Denise Bence.

The event will be held Thursday evening, 5-7 p.m., on the school grounds. In case of rain, the event will be held at the Shelbyville High School gym.

All of the Main Street School teachers help with food. Each classroom, with the help roommothers, will sponsor a game or activity. Tickets for the games are 4 for $1.

“Something new we have this year is the inflatable bounce castle and caterpillar obstacle course,” Bence said.

In addition to the games, there will be a display of students’ artwork under the direction of art instructor Wayde Zerkle and classroom concerts under the direction of music teacher Alissa Welch.

“We usually sing songs with actions... and we’re still going to do that,” said Welch. “But this year we’ve created mallet accompaniments to three children’s stories. There will be a Power Point presentation to go along with it. The program is called ‘Mallet Madness’.”

There will also be a Scholastic book fair and a sale of older library books.

Each classroom will have a themed basket for a special raffle.

Hot dogs, chips, drinks, popcorn, cotton candy, and cupcakes are also available. Bence encourages attendees to have supper at the event.

“We usually have a really good crowd. The kids enjoy it,” Bence said. “You don’t have to have a child in the school to come. Everyone’s invited.”
