On Saturday, May 17, Shelby County residents will have the opportunity to get some exercise, enjoy the beautiful spring weather and help a great cause all at the same time. The Pregnancy Resource Center (PRC) will hold their annual fundraiser, the 17th annual “Walk for Life because life is priceless”.
PRC Director Diana Litteral said the registration begins at 10 a.m. in the pavilion located next to the Shelby County Senior Center in Forest Park, Shelbyville.
Litteral said the theme this year is similar to the Mastercard commercials, Meeting a friend for coffee....$4; Taking the family out for breakfast on a Saturday morning....$20; Participating in the Walk for Life in order to make a difference .....priceless.
Litteral said this year the plan calls for the walk to start in Forest Park and the walkers will walk to the Center which is located at 225 E. South 1st St. and then walk back to the park. Literal has measured and that walk is just about two miles.
She said the walk will come down to the Center because there have been several renovations at the Center and the staff is anxious to show off the new improvements made to the center.
“We want people to see what their money goes for,” said Litteral.
Litteral went on to say the money raised in this fundraiser stays in Shelby County.
The way the fundraiser works is folks gather pledges and those are flat pledges, not so much per mile. Then on the day the walker makes the walk and then collects the pledge money.
As an extra incentive Litteral said they have what is called a Mega Raffle each year.
“For every $100 a walker raises they get a ticket and then there is a raffle with the tickets,” said Litteral.
Some of the prizes include a Kodak 7MP Easysgare Digital Camera, a Jensen 3.5” Touch-Screen Portable GPS (Global Positioning System), a Digital Picture Frame and a Uniflame Wood Burning Outdoor Firebowl.
“In addition to these items we also have Cardinal Baseball tickets,” continued Litteral.
The pregnancy Resource Center is a life affirming ministry that offers living alternatives to abortion vulnerable women by providing practical resources, parental education and adoption plans. Because of donations to fundraisers such as the Walk for Life, PRC is able to provide services for their clients at no cost to them. PRC operates solely on the support and gifts of people such as the walkers and the folks who support the walkers with pledges.
“Many people don’t realize we take no government funds and we are solely supported by individuals, churches and the major fundraisers,” Litteral said.
Litteral said she has a new assistant, Nicole Eversole. Eversole will be working in client services.
“My main focus is the girls,” said Eversole.
Eversole said there will be fun events going on at the park for the walkers.
“Those events including a free lunch, a free T-shirt, face painting and live entertainment,” said Eversole.
Litteral also wanted Shelby County residents to know they have just completed their seventh baby up for adoption.
