Liberty Unit Elects Officers

— President Cinda Held called to order the June 9 meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary Liberty Unit 289.
A report was given of the 19th District 249th Tri-Annual Convention held on June 6 in Rantoul. 19th District President Yvonne Tucker presided over the convention. Sarah Wyckoff and Jamie Oakley carried the Unit’s colors. There were six Unit colors presented. Department First Vice President Julia Moore, Department Second Vice President Pam Ray, Illiana Hospital Representative Joan Mann, 4th President Barb Elam, 19th District Sr. Vice Commander Kenny Phipps, 19th District Jr. Vice Commander Bob Henderson, and SAL National VA&R Chairman Bruno T. Williamson were special guests. National SAL Commander Tommy Cisna brought greetings on behalf of the Sons of the American Legion. Danville Illiana VA received $139,000 in donations – with the 19th District having donated $56,000 of that amount. The Unit members in attendance were all officers or chairmen on the District Board – Jill Layton, District Historian; Linda Oakley, District Treasurer; Caralea Moffett, District Color Bearer; Cinda Moffett, Music Chairman, Sarah Wyckoff, Education Chairman, and Jamie Oakley, Cavalcade of Memories Chairman. There was a beautiful memorial service conducted by District Chaplain Nora Hanaver. 19th District mourned the loss of 48 Auxiliary members – one was a charter member and one was a VIM. Strasburg received a citation for carrying colors at all three conventions. IGS Chairman Kathy Cisna advised there were 42 citizens from 35 high schools that would be attending Illini Girls State this year. Unit Children & Youth Chairman Caralea Moffett won a citation for Outstanding Unit C&Y report and for being a Toby Tire contributor. Jill Layton won a citation for Outstanding Junior Activities report. Jill also received a citation for Best Unit Leadership Report, a citation for Best Unit Legislative Report, and a citation for second place with the Unit National Security Report. Jill Layton won first in the pressbook competition. Wanda Bohlen was endorsed for the 4th Division. The following officers were installed for the 2009-2010 19th District Officers: President Patti Williamson (Farmer City), Vice President Jill Layton (Strasburg), Historian Deb Lewis (Cisco), Treasurer Linda Oakley (Strasburg), Chaplain Dawn Friedman (Champaign), Secretary Marcia Roberts (Rantoul), Sgt-at-Arms Lois Madden (Rantoul), Color Bearers Dolorse Wisegarver (Deland) and Lori Rushing (Homer). The 19th District Fall Convention will be held Mahomet 1015 on September 26 .

Motion was made for the Unit to take the poppy proceeds and buy gym shoes, spray deodorant, body wash, razor blades, bar soap, and foot powder to take to the Danville Illiana VA.
A thank you was read from the Stewardson-Strasburg High School for the $50 scholarship.
The Auxiliary decided to carry the Unit colors, and possibly even wear our aprons, at the June 28 parade in Stewardson.
