Stars Scald Trojans

JOHN CURTIS - Daily Union Sports Editor

Windsor Junior High baseball finished in the Elite 8 last fall, but they graduated eight of their 8th-graders that got them there. They could have used them on Saturday as they opened their 2009 season getting 10-runned in six innings by Stew-Stras, 13-3.

The Trojans were led by Alex Allen and Hayden Cole, two key pieces from last year’s state run. Allen went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Cole 2-for-3. But, they needed some more help at the plate. Three errors in the field and six walks given up by Windsor pitchers didn’t help.

As for Stew-Stras, they came to hit. The Stars belted out 11 hits, including a triple and two doubles, leading to their 13 runs. Windsor had just seven hits, with just one double.

Windsor started out picking up where they left off last year. Allen led off with a double, went to third on a wild pitch then took home on a passed ball, 1-0. Devin Deremiah then worked a walk and Cole singled. Deremiah and Cole advanced on a passed ball. Christian Vonderheide then bore down on the mound and struck out the next three Trojans.

Windsor’s 1-0 lead did not stand up long. Stew-Stras came out swinging. Helmuth reached on an error to right and with one out Vonderheide singled. Bryse Bugger walked and, with two outs, Dylan Ohnesorge singled for a 2-1 Stars lead. Vonderheide struck out the sides in the Windsor 2nd and the Stars came back for more.

Luke Daniels led off with a double and Helmuth hit a 1-out single. Jacob Kramer singled in a run and Vonderheide walked. Bugger then banged a 3-run triple for a 6-1 Star lead.

Windsor had the top of the order at the plate and Allen obliged with a single. Deremiah then walked for the second straight time. Cole followed with another single, driving in Allen. Jesse Smith walked and Deremiah went home on a passed ball, cutting the Star lead to 6-3 Stars. Allen gave up a couple of walks in the Star 3rd, but got out of the inning.

In the Windsor 4th, Vonderheide rang up the first two batters, but then Allen came to the plate and singled again. He stole second, but then was out stealing 3rd to end the inning. Stew-Stras then started to gain momentum towards the 10-run early dismissal.

Kramer was hit by a pitch and Vonderheide singled. With one out, Culver walked and Ohnesorge singled. Slifer reached on an error and the 3-run 4th gave the Stars an 8-3 lead.

Windsor got something going in the 5th, but it fell through. Deremiah singled, but was out on Cole’s fielder’s choice. Spencer Blackburn walked and, with two outs, Jesse Smith walked to load the bases. Glen Smith hit into a fielder’s choice and the Trojans were held scoreless.

The Stars streaked again in the 5th getting to the threshhold of the 10-run ending. Helmuth led off with a walk and Kramer singled. With one out, Bugger reached on another Trojan error. Will Culver doubled in two runs and Allen was don on the mound for Windsor. Deremiah came in, gave up a walk, rang up a batter and got a man to ht into a fielder’s choice and end the rally.

Down 12-3, Windsor needed runs in a hurry, but didn’t get them. With two outs, Allen walked to reach base for the fourth time in the game. A following ground out pulled the plug. Stew-Stras needed just one run to end the game and they got it.

Colton Anderson drew a lead-off walk and stole second. With one out, Kramer was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Vonderheide, who had pitched the Stars into the lead and had reached base 3-of-4 times in the game, then smacked a walk-off single to end the game, 13-3.

Stew-Stras was to host Neoga on Monday then Dieterich on Tuesday. Windsor plays next on Tuesday at Cumberland.

Stew-Stras 13, Windsor 3
