---- — The Daily Union Athletes of the Week shined at a time when pitchers are usually center stage. These three hitters lit the fuse and launched ICBM missiles in the first week of the season.

On Saturday, in the Shelbyville Lady Rams’ second game of the season, Brandy Smith a hit the first 4x4 by either boys or girls. The center fielder launched a grand slam in the Ram 6-run rally. With two runs already in the 2nd inning, the bases were loaded when the previous batter was hit by a pitch. Smith stepped into the batter’s box and drove the first pitch, clearing the bases. It gave Shelby a 10-0 lead. Smith went 3-for-3, scoring three times and driving in five runs. Smith was 1-for-4 on Thursday and started her season, hitting 5-for-7 (.714).

On Thursday, Shelbyville’s home run champ from the last few years hit a home run in the season opener. Luke Hatfield, who has had 11 home runs 2-of-3 years previously (one home run short of a school record), has led the team in RBIs since he was a freshman.

The Rams were up 3-1. Hatfield was 0-for-2 with two strikes on him in the 5th inning. He turned on he next pitch and gave Shelby the game-winning separation. Hatfield went 1-for-3 with a 2-run blast, a run and 2 RBIs.

Also on Thursday, Windsor junior Alex Allen, went yard in his first at bat of the season. Allen led off for Windsor/ Stew-Stras and gave the 2-2 pitch a ride. Allen finished 1-for-3 with a home run. Allen went 3-for-5 with two RBIs v. Okaw Valley on Friday and 4-for-4 with 5 RBIs v. Martinsville on Saturday. He hit 8-of-12 the first week (.667).
