Modzelewski, Russo featured in art exhibit

A new art show is opening at Flourishes Gallery and Studios in Shelbyville on Saturday, February 15 from 1-4 p.m. Flourishes, located downtown at 140 ½ E. Main, brings to you the most recent works of Dan Modzelewski and paintings and ceramic pieces by Annette Russo.

With the variety of subject matter and material used, it offers interest to viewers in many art aspects. Both artists will be present for the opening so that visitors can talk to them about their work. The exhibit will be on display through April 15.

Dan Modzelewski is not new to the art scene of Shelbyville and Decatur with his painted figures on the exterior of many Shelbyville buildings and being a member of Decatur’s Gallery 510. His Flourishes exhibited pieces consist mostly of his large conte crayon drawings done in sepia tones to pay homage to the history of a national summer pastime, baseball. But, it also includes a variety of subject matter in colored pencil and watercolor.

Dan says, “It’s been a tough winter but spring is on the horizon and along with spring comes…BASEBALL! One of my fondest memories of my childhood was the day my parents took me to my first major league baseball game.” So, his new exhibit of drawings that highlight America’s Game, contains pieces from his “The Boys of Summer” exhibit that opened in October at Gallery 510 in Decatur.

Annette Russo exhibits her work at the Blue Connection, Millikin University Gallery in Decatur, on a regular basis and recently was part of an Anne Lloyd Gallery exhibit of pottery at the Decatur Area Arts Council. Other recent shows have been in the Perkinson Gallery and McLain County Arts Center.

She has been an art instructor in the Millikin Art Department for the past thirty years and is currently supervising art as therapy and art education students. She also has used her talents at DOVE, Eastern Star, Growing Strong, Macon County Probation and other community and service organizations.
