Crime numbers down in 2013

The winter weather is causing some damage to the roof of the Chautauqua building and steps have been taken to minimize any more damage.

Commissioner Gib Smart reported to the City Council Monday evening that the high winds have ripped some of the rubberized sheeting from the upper roof on the century-old building. Smart authorized Lakeside Construction to remove additional sheeting that could rip in more wind and do cleanup work. The $3,300 expense was included in the month’s claims to be paid.

Shelbyville Police Chief David Tallman presented his annual report to the council, comparing numbers from 2012 and 2013. The total number of complaints for 2013 was down by 266 from 2012 and the number of cases was also down by 117 in 2013 over 2012.

The number of vehicular burglaries was up during 2013.

“The main suspect was arrested on unrelated charges and held for a period of time,” Tallman said. “He has just gotten out (of jail). Be sure to lock you car door.”

Tallman reported that the crime solve rate for 2013 is 86 percent. Last year it was 85 percent.

He added that the department is working with the FBI on more identity theft cases - most of which originate outside the country, making them “basically unsolvable”.

In action, the council approved the ordinance presented to change the council’s regular meeting time to 6 p.m. beginning with the next meeting. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 18, due to Presidents Day observance.

The council also approved the temporary street closure for East North 9th Street for the Shelby Memorial Hospital Cystic Fibrosis event in Forest Park on September 27.

Commissioner Bill Shoaff reported that chlorine was destroying the conduit at the water treatment plant and he authorized Rick Sphar to replace the conduit as it was becoming a safety hazard.

Shoaff also reminded people to let their water run a little bit to help keep pipes and water meters from freezing during the frigid temperatures.
