Lt. Governor, Senate candidates look for Shelby County support

Recently chosen candidates for state and federal offices raised the rally cry for local Republicans to get out the support for the November general election.

The Lincoln Day dinner held Saturday evening at the First Church of the Nazarene fellowship hall featured keynote speaker Jim Oberweis, GOP candidate for U.S. Senate. His opponent is Senator Dick Durbin,

“People are sick and tired of career politicians,” Oberweis said. “Our country is heading int he wrong direction and putting financial burden on your grandchildren and my grandchildren.”

Oberweis became CEO of his own billion dollar Oberweis Asset Management company. Prior to that he worked as a math and science teacher. He also works as a director of Northern Illinois Food Bank. He bought the single-store Oberweis Dairy, a family business, and grew it into 44 retail ice cream and dairy stores which employs over 1,000 people.

“Durbin is a millionaire at taxpayer expense. He has never had a real job in the public sector,” Oberweis said.

Oberweis also supports the move to get an 8-year term limit for Illinois politicians on the ballot this fall.

“I’m the underdog and I realize that. I need your support,” Oberweis said.

Also speaking was Lt. Governor candidate Evelyn Sanguinetti, running mate of gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner.

Sanquinetti is a daughter of immigrants, growing up in Florida under the “safety net” of public aid and food stamps. Through hard work and personal responsibility, she attended law school in Chicago and eventually became assistant attorney general under Jim Ryan.

“Bruce (Rauner) and I believe in better schools, lower taxes, and term limits,” Sanguinetti said. “Quinn is trying to make it about class warfare. I’m an example that it’s not about class warfare.

Sanguinetti said that she believes “people see promise in taking back our state.”

Also making appearances at the dinner were Attorney General candidate Paul Schimpf, who is challenging Lisa Madigan in the general election; Representative Adam Brown; and Senator Chapin Rose.
