Campers at Lone Point Recreational Area will have a new campfire ring to use thanks to an area Eagle Scout and his crew.
Elliott Smithson of Shelbyville Troop 51 chose to build a community fire ring at the Walleye Group camp as suggested by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville.
“(Ranger) Matt Durbin is a friend of mine and he suggested the project,” said Smithson.
He enlisted a crew which included Brett Austin of Fox & Austin as well as other troop members and parents. He started the project on September 22 with pouring the pad for the fire pit. He and his crew finished the project September 28.
“It took a lot of coordinating. I had to work pretty close to the Corps to get everything out here I needed to work,” Smithson said.
The 36-foot diameter ring holds benches, and picnic tables and a 54-inch diameter fire pit. The area will be rocked and mulched for plants.
