Comets Surprise St. Anthony

St. Anthony had been untouchable in the NTC this season, especially after beating Altamont in two dominant games last week to claim the undisputed lead in the conference. On Tuesday, Stew-Stras was too quick for the Bulldogs and they surprised St. Anthony by knocking them off their perch in straight games, 25-22, 25-22.

The win dethroned St. Anthony as conference leader and brought a 3-way tie between Stew-Stras, St. Anthony, and Altamont.

“I am so proud of our girls,” said Comet coach Ronda Schlechte. “This has been our best game yet this season. They were all really pumped about the game. They kept fighting when they were behind and they got the job done. The mental toughness was there and they kept the momentum. We were really worried about St. A’s blocking and have been working on quicker plays. It paid off for us.”

The Comet setters Becca Schlechte and Baylee Quast teamed up to dish 22 of the 23 kills (95%), with 12 and 10 assists, respectively. Schlechte recorded a double-double, by adding 11 digs.

Kendall Knop also had a double-double, swinging for a team-high and season-high 13 kills and leading the court defense with 12 digs.

A big key to the win were the 47 Comet digs in a 2-game set with seven players recording digs. They also had three blocks on the Bulldog hitters. Aces weren’t a big factor in the game, though Clara Kaufman led the way again with two aces.

The Comet varsity (13-5, 8-1 NTC) heads to the Pana tournament on Saturday, then hosts Ramsey on Wednesday, while the JV (7-6, 4-5 NTC) plays Wednesday hosting Ramsey.
