Okaw edges Shelby For Sectional

LSA and Meridian took the top two spots at the Mattoon Golf Regional on Tuesday and the final spot for sectional was between three different schools: Okaw Valley, Shelbyville, and Casey. Okaw took the spot by just five strokes.

Okaw Valley finished with a 384, ahead of Shelbyville (389) and Casey (389). In addition to Okaw Valley advancing, three other Shelby Area golfers advanced as individuals.

Okaw Valley’s team didn’t have any of their players score good enough to make it as individuals. However, the team packed close enough and each player cut their scores by a stroke each, just enough to advance as a team.

Jay Orris 94 (48-46) and Devon Still 94 (47-47) led the way with 94s. They were followed by Drew Fruchtl with a 95 (47-48) and Colton Sroka with a 101 (48-53). Fifth man Logan Tipsword shot 112 (55-57).

Tristan Warner of Windsor/Stew-Stras golf was the fifth individual to advance, shooting an 89 (44-45). He was followed by Tayler Schanks with a 90 (46-44). Ram teammate Brett Peifer also punched his ticket for sectional by carding a 92 (44-48).

Tyler Schanks shot a 96 (47-49). Shelby needed a 106 to match Okaw Valley, but th e Ram 4th scorer shot 111 and Okaw squeezed past Shelby. Windsor/Stew-Stras was far off the mark, back at 442. Warner was the only Devil to shoot under 100.
