---- — What started out as a typical day for Jonah Pfiester of Kansas and Kelsey Beard of Neoga took a happy turn. The two high school students were surprised in class recently with the announcement they won an Apple iPad Mini, courtesy of Lake Land College.

The two students went to the college’s annual Career Day event along with more than 1,300 area junior and senior high school students.

During Career Day, Pfiester and Beard had the a chance to explore career options by attending various break-out sessions with Lake Land College instructors and volunteers who come to the college to share knowledge about their profession with the students.

Additionally, the Illinois College Exposition (ICE Fair) was held in the Field House, which gave students the opportunity to talk with university representatives, as well as career and military representatives. At the end of the event, the students filled out a survey. Several names were drawn for prizes, but two received the grand prize of the iPad.

Beard and Pfiester said they enjoyed the event.

“It was an interesting and good event,” said Beard. “It gave me insight on what I wanted to do.”

“The Career Day committee wanted to add some excitement to the event, but also to let the students know we appreciate their visit to Lake Land College,” said Lisa Shumard-Shelton, director of new student admissions.

Shelton said the event, which is now more than 30 years old, is designed to educate students in a fun way.

“It’s a fun-filled day full of opportunities for students interested in a variety of options. Students can find out what they want to know about educational and career options,” she said.
