SMH battles cancer and provides hope in different, fun ways

Shelbyville Daily Union

---- — Shelby Memorial Hospital (SMH) is working hard to defeat cancer and have fun while doing so. Join the fight by supporting any one of these events.

On Saturday, April 12, SMH will host its first-ever Quarter Auction Spring Bazaar. The doors will open at 11:45 a.m., and bidding will begin at 12:30. Some of the participating vendors for this event include Uppercase Living, Avon, Let Them Eat Cake, Tastefully Simple, Pampered Chef, Norwex, Origami Owl, Scentsy, Rodan and Field Skin Care, Jamberry Nails, Thirty-One, Mary Kay, a bake sale and many more homemade crafts. Please enter at the south side of the hospital. You will want to stop by the bank and bring a roll of quarters with you for bidding. This event will support the SMH Relay for Life team.

Phil Miller, CFO of SMH, challenges that he can sell more Cub raffle tickets than Caroline Reynolds, Director of the New Vision Department at SMH, can sell Cardinal raffle tickets.

Miller is selling chances for two Chicago Wrigley Field seats for Saturday, July 26, at the 1:15 p.m. game as the Cubs versus the Cardinals. Meanwhile, Reynolds is raffling two Busch Stadium seats for Sunday, August 31, at 1:15 as the Cardinals play the Cubs. Each chance costs one dollar, or you can buy 6 raffle tickets for $5.00. The contest takes place through Thursday, April 24, at 5 p.m.

The fan who sells the most raffle tickets for his or her own team wins bragging rights. The loser will dress in the opposing team’s colors on Friday, April 25, and as an additional penalty must kiss the goat “Peanut”. All proceeds from the Cards vs. Cubs Raffle will go to the SMH Relay for Life Team for the American Cancer Society. Tickets may be bought by calling the hospital at 774-3961. Please ask for Phil Miller or Caroline Reynolds.

Another fun way that SMH has devised to raise funds for cancer is a pink pedal car raffle. The pedal car was decorated and donated by cancer survivor, Bill Calvert, husband of Regina Calvert, SMH employee. The back panel of the car says “I support Relay for Life”. Raffle tickets for this adorable little car are on sale now at the hospital. Chances to win this toy car are $5.00 each or five for $20.00. The car will be on exhibit at all SMH Relay for Life events, and raffle tickets will be available. Tickets may also be purchased by calling SMH at (217) 774-3961. Please ask for Jean Hudson. All income from this raffle will also be donated to the Relay for Life by the SMH team.

Marilyn Sears, CEO of SMH said, “We at Shelby Memorial Hospital would like to invite everyone to join in our fight against cancer. We work hard to find ways to fund cancer research. We take the fight seriously, but we want to have fun in the process. Together, with your help, we will finish the fight against cancer.”

Anyone interested in forming a Relay for Life Team may contact Phil Miller at SMH. Miller is a team recruiter for Shelby County. SMH is a participant in the American Cancer Society’s Shelby County Relay for Life.
