Military headstones were placed near the graves of a Blackhawk War veteran and his Civil War veteran son Friday thanks to the efforts of a Shelbyville man.
The stones were placed near the Graham family plot at the corner of Veterans and Highland Avenues inside Gate 3 of Glenwood Cemetery.
Ed Boedecker tried applying for the military markers for Thomas Headen Graham and Martillas Graham through the Veterans Administration, but was turned down because he was not next of kin nor did he have permission from the next of kin.
He also wanted to erect headstones for Martin Couch, a veteran of the Mexican War, and Sam Anglin, a veteran of the War of 1812.
“I just wanted to do something to honor these men and their service,” Boedecker said.
Boedecker approached Adams Memorial in Charleston about some kind of stone. The owner discounted the price of the stones to about $500 each from the regular $800 price. The Glenwood Cemetery Board waived the foundation fee for the stones. Boedecker has received $150 in donations so far for the stones, which he has paid for out of his own pocket.
Anyone wishing to donate to the project should contact Boedecker at 217-774-2977.
