---- — Shelbyville baseball (3-0) is putting up some good offense so far this season and it continued on Saturday as they munched Marshall, 11-6.
The Rams had Marshall’s number with a 10-2 lead through the six innings Andrew Hawkins pitched. He threw his second win in as many outings, striking out nine and allowing just two hits in six innings. Meanwhile, the Ram hit crew teed off. Shelby smacked 11 hits.
“Nate Standerfer has been hitting the ball really well,” said Ram coach Sam Mehl. “He hit 3-for-5 against Morrisonville and 4-for-5 against Marshall.”
Standerfer repeated his double-double (2 doubles) like against Morrisonville and drove in three runs. Hawkins helped his own cause, going 3-for-5 with three more runs batted in.
They put up a 3-run down payment in the 1st inning. Jake Keown drew a lead-off walk and Eli Miller singled. Hatfield clunned the ball to center and the fielder misplayed it. Keown scored. Standerfer hit a 2-run double.
Hawkins started by throwing a strikeout, then threw out the next batter. After a walk, McConnell threw the next batter out 3rd to 1st. Hawkins struck out two batters in the 2nd and got the other guy to pop out.
Shelby added a pair in the 3rd. Standerfer led off reaching on an error and Neil Yockey singled. Hawkins smacked a 2-run double, 5-0 Rams. McConnell threw out a batter in the Marshall 3rd, and Hawkins struck out two more batters.
Marshall got one back in the 4th on a single, a walk, and a 2-out error, while Hawkins KO’d two more. But all that did was awaken the Rams. Shelbyville exploded for five runs in the top of the 5th for a 10-1 lead.
Standerfer doubled, Yockey walked, Hawkins hit an RBI single, Garrett Manship walked and Luke McConnell added to the Ram onslaught by launching a 3-run homer, 10-1 Rams. Hawkins rang up another batter in the 5th and Marshall was retired in order. Hatfield tracked down a fly in right and Keown threw batter out, 2nd to 1st.
Marshall got to Hawkins for one more run in the 6th, a solo home run, but still trailed 10-2. Keown threw out another batter from 2nd and Yockey gunned down a batter from shortstop to 1st.
The Rams got that run back in the 7th. With one out, Miller was hit by a pitch and Standerfer doubled him home.
Leading 11-2 in the top of the 7th, the Rams put in a reliever for Hawkins. The experiment didn’t work and Marshall scored four runs on three walks on the first reliever and four singles on the final reliever. But the rally was still too little too late.
Shelbyville (3-0) is scheduled to play at Arthur on Monday.
