County Board approves new polling precinct location for Shelbyville 5

Voters in Shelbyville Precinct 5 will have a new polling place thanks to an action by the Shelby County Board last week.

The polling will be moved to Cornerstone Community Fellowship Church gym from the courthouse basement.

“It feels like a good place. It’s a good idea to get the election place out of the courthouse,” said Shelby County Clerk Jessica Fox. She also noted that voters who come to the courthouse have to be screened through the metal detector. The church will have easier access for voters.

The board also approved a resolution opposing a mandate from the National Fire Protection Act requiring a sprinkler systems installed in new residences.

“The mandate is cost prohibitive for homeowners,” Cannon said.

In other action the board approved the 2013-2014 fiscal year budget. The budget reflects spending at $10,978,401 and a revenue of $11,213,327 for an “in the black” total of $234,926.

The board also approved a joint agreement between Illinois Department of Transportation and Shelby County for construction costs associated with replacement of the Towbruff bridge. Estimated cost of the project is $450,000 to be shared by the federal and state funds.

The board agreed to a petition from Richland Township for the replacement of a drainage structure with pipe located approximately three miles at an estimated cost of $10,000 to be split between the township and the county.

County Highway engineer Alan Spesard also reported that the Lakewood Bridge has been approved for temporary replacement with pipe tank cars. The structure cost is estimated at $42,157 with a 75 percent reimbursement from IEMA.

Work on a bridge in Ash Grove township, approximately 5 miles southeast of Tower Hill, is expected to begin October 1.

Board member Bob Jordan reported that county municipalities need to have facilities for animals while waiting for the animal control officer to arrive.

“Some are calling and expecting him (Brad Hudson) to be there within minutes. That’s not possible,” Jordan said.
