Disabled deer hunting blinds available at Whitley Creek

Lake Shelbyville - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville is offering additional deer hunting opportunities at Whitley Creek Recreation Area for disabled deer hunters holding a state issued P2A card.

Disabled hunters will be able to reserve a block of two (2) blinds in the closed Recreation Area during archery deer season. (Oct 1 - Jan 19 excluding firearm and youth deer hunting seasons) In addition, disabled hunters holding a valid Lake Shelbyville Project Moultrie second shotgun season (December 5-8) or Lake Shelbyville Project Moultrie muzzleloader season (December 13-15) permit will be allowed to hunt Whitley Creek also. Every year a Deer Hunt for People with Disabilities is held at Lake Shelbyville for 25 applicants during Illinois’ first firearm season. These blinds will allow disabled hunters that didn’t draw into the hunt or that would like to archery hunt to have an easily accessible area in which to deer hunt.

Hunting will be allowed by permit only on Tuesday/Wednesday and Saturday/Sunday throughout the season, to exclude the youth firearm season (October 12-14) and first firearm season (November 22-24). Reservations will be taken starting September 23, 2013, by calling (217)-774-3951 and must be made 3 days in advance of the hunt. After the reservation has been made, a special use permit will be issued to the hunter. Only one reservation per hunter may be made at a time and the hunter must have used their reservation before signing up for another hunt date.

A special thanks to the Shelbyville Boy Scout Troop 51 who built four enclosed waterproof blinds that will be available to use. Additional information and a map of the Whitley Creek Recreation Area blind locations can be found at: http://www.mvs.usace.army.mil/Missions/Recreation/LakeShelbyville/Recreation/Hunting.aspx
