Shelbyville Scarecrow Daze, Balloon Fest set for Oct. 11-13

Shelbyville Daily Union

---- — Scarecrows will be popping up around Shelbyville as the annual Scarecrow Daze approaches. The annual celebration will be held October 11-13 in downtown Shelbyville.

This year’s theme is “Fall in Love with Shelbyville”. The festival will be coupled with the annual Balloonfest sponsored by Touchstone Energy.

“We’ve doubled the number of vendors with nearly 50,” said Chamber of Commerce office manager Vonda McConnell. “I believe the festival is getting better each year. Brenda Elder has done as incredible job organizing the festivities and already has plans for expanding next year’s Scarecrow Daze.”

The event will feature music, arts, and crafts in the Mini-park all afternoon on Saturday, a car show at the courthouse parking lot, and kids’ games at Main Street School.

“Parents may purchase $5 wristbands for the kids and they can play all the games and all the jumping they can do. There will also be a train to ride at the school,” McConnell said.

Also featured Friday night at Legends Draft House is Neon Rounders and Chris Cavanuagh Saturday night at The Iron Keg, both from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Balloons will take to the skies, weather permitting, on Friday at about 5 p.m. at the soccer fields in Forest Park for the first of three days of events for the Balloon Fest.

“We have 11 balloons this year, more than last year,” said coordinator Kevin Bernson. “We have a very jam-packed weekend planned.”

Other activities include an expanded balloon glow and cookout at the Dam West Recreation Area off of Ninth Street.

“The cookout and activities will begin at 4 p.m. and the balloon glow will begin at dusk. This year, weather permitting, we will have tethered balloon rides for $10. Proceeds will be given to a local charity,” Bernson said.

Target tasks, another viewer favorite, will be at the soccer fields in Forest Park on Saturday morning and the Ninth Street beach area on Sunday. Both events will be about 7 a.m. DJ Kerry Campbell will be entertaining during the task flights.

Bernson said all events for the balloon festival will be subject to weather conditions and events will be updated on Lake Shelbyville Balloon Fest Facebook page.
