Shelbyville survives Windsor

Shelbyville basketball (1-1) got their first win under new head coach Stu Hott on Tuesday, surviving Windsor, 56-51.

In the first game of the season, Shelbyville stormed back and lost by just three points. The tables were turned on them against Windsor, but the Rams escaped with the win.

Windsor did not have an answer in the early going for Ram post player Luke McConnell. The Rams led after the 1st with eight of McConnell’s 12 points. Tyler Hendryx had the only other Ram basket, while Devin Miner and Cwenton Williams each split a pair at the line.

Devil leading scorer, sophomore Tristan Warner, scored three times, Mitchell Haddock hit a trey and Alex Allen got to the line making two free throws. Shelby had just a 1-point lead, 12-11.

In the 2nd period, Shelby opened up their can of 3-pointers, making three of their eight treys in the game. Hendryx had a trey, Drennian Martin had his first of four treys, and Spencer Shadwell had his first of three triples. Miner, Martin and McConnell added solo twos.

Windsor got to the line. Haddock made 2-of-4. Nic Hutchinson made both of his free throws, after he hit a 3-pointer. Allen converted a 3-point play, scored again, then made both ends of a 1-and-1. Shelby had a 4-point lead at the break, 29-25.

The Rams got separation in the 3rd with four more 3-pointers, opening up a 12-point lead, 45-33. Martin and Shadwell were the arc angels, both making two more from the arc in the period. Shadwell also made a deuce and McConnell capped his scoring with a two.

Windsor couldn’t keep up with the torrid Shelby shooting. Allen and Warner had the Devils’ only two buckets in the 3rd. Hayden Cole made 2-of-4 free throws and Warner 2-of-2, but trailed by a dozen heading into crunch time, 45-33
