A new show is available for viewing at Flourishes Gallery and Studios at 140 ½ E. Main in downtown Shelbyville. Becky Marcussen, Jan VonBokel and Sam Tucker filled the gallery area with a variety of art media including painting, fibers and sculpture. The show opens with the artists present at a reception in their honor on Sunday, July 7, from 1 to 3 p.m. Come and view the show and talk to the artists. Stay for the rest of the afternoon at the First Sunday Sing with Gospel music that starts at 3 p.m.
Becky Marcussen works in oil, watercolor and pastel and has been on the art scene most of her life. Her works showing at Flourishes contains various subject matter, from animals to still life to landscapes. She has art degrees from Eastern Illinois University and teaches art classes at Lakeland College and in her studio in her local town of Effingham with 4 to 6 people. She has also judged a number of art shows, one this spring being the Shelby County Art Show. She won the Best of Show award recently in Effingham at the Bonutti Clinic Show.
Jan VonBokel is a contemporary/expressionist artist working in various mediums including acrylic, watercolor and pastel. She uses a mixture of all of these, creating a highly textural piece. Jan uses an intense color palette using bold brush strokes in her collection she calls her “NO FEAR” series. Her designing textile pieces have been hand dyed and painted. She loves to teach her “NO FEAR” landscape classes and is using her method to teach developmentally handicapped and people with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Sam Tucker’s love of welding started in 1976-77 while working as a welder in Decatur after high school. After a BA degree with a minor in Industrial Technology, he has worked as a Technical Illustrator, a Graphic Designer and in advertising doing all kinds of production work. He resides in Argenta where he continues to weld. He also paints with his new wife, Jan VonBokel.
