High water stifles some lake activity

Recent rains have continued to raise the water levels at Lake Shelbyville and have hampered some of the summer activities at the lake, but boating and camping can still be enjoyed for the holiday week.

Lake levels as of Monday morning measured 611.73 feet - 12 feet above normal summer pool. Crest is expected Tuesday at 612 feet with no additional rain on Monday.

“Dam West recreational area is closed,” said Lake Shelbyville park ranger Darren Schneider. The beach is closed and the entrance at Ninth Street is barricaded. But the high water boat ramp is open.”

The beach at Wolf Creek State Park is open

He added that beaches at Sullivan and Wilborn Creek recreational areas are also closed and the boat ramp at Whitley Creek is closed.

High water ramps are open at Opossum Creek, Lone Point, Coon Creek, Wilburn Creek, Bo Wood.

“The campgrounds are all okay for now.

High water could close some of the campsites if we get more rains, which could affect those with reservations,” Schneider said.

Lake Shelbyville is the northernmost point of control of flow of the Kaskaskia River, which flows into the Mississippi River. Because of the continuing spring rains, rivers are swollen.

The amount of water released through the Lake Shelbyville dam is regulated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at St. Louis. The current outflow is 1880 cubic feet per second.

Down river at Carlyle, the lake pool is 450.88 - nearly six feet above its normal summer pool.

Record level at Lake Shelbyville was 620.26 feet, recorded June 29, 1974.
