Police investigating Walmart theft

Three people are being sought for recent Walmart thefts including the store in Shelbyville.

According to Shelbyville Police Chief David Tallman, just over $1,500 was taken from a cash register at the local store on May 26. He added that on May 24 the Anna Walmart in Southern Illinois had also been robbed of $2,600. The Anna police department had notified other cities with Walmart stores of the robbery.

"The people are not from Shelbyville. I thought maybe they were from Decatur, but with robberies in other parts of the state and outside of the state, Lord knows where these people are from," Tallman said.

Video cameras outside the store showed a Chevy Traverse with no front license plate parked in a handicap spot. One black male with a cane, possibly in his 70s, entered the store first. A second black man, possibly in his 30s or 40s, entered later.

"The older man bought a couple of cheap things and was seen talking with the clerk while standing between the clerk and the younger guy," Tallman said. "The younger guy used a key to open the cash drawer and grab the money. You can see this clearly on the store video. They know exactly what they are doing."

Both men returned to the Traverse, getting into the vehicle on the passenger side.

Tallman said that the store contacted the police department on May 27 after the register shortage was found.

Anyone with information on the suspects is asked to contact Shelby County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-528-8477 or text TIP478 and the message to CRIMES (274637).

Calls to Walmart's corporate office were not returned by press time.
