SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
More than 450 flags were retired Friday evening in a ceremony at the VFW. Friday, June 14, was Flag Day.
The ceremony was held by the VFW Post #4829 and auxiliary, the Roy Vanderpool American Legion Post and auxiliary, and Boy Scout Troop #51.
Following a prayer by VFW Chaplain Darrell Best,the flags to be retired were presented before being burned over two fires. Veterans saluted as the first flags were committed. Community members were also on hand to watch the ceremony.
Ashes were properly buried Saturday morning by VFW commander Walt Lookofsky and Shelby County Honor Guard commander Bill Shoaff.at the Soldiers' Field in Glenwood Cemetery.
