Windsor upsets Arcola

Arcola is the Arcola 1A Volleyall Regional host and the Arcola 1A Volleyball Sectional host. But they are done, after Windsor (#3) upset the #2 seeded Riders on Tuesday in the semifinal, 25-19, 26-24.

Windsor had lost to Arcola in the Windsor Invitational, 25-23, 25-21 and finished 4th in the tourney, while Arcola finished 2nd. The Blue Devils had a 14-point turnaround from experience.

Instead of being outscored by six in the close battle in Windsor, the Devils out-scored Arcola by eight in Arcola. One big difference for Windsor this time was hitter Autumn Bennett was back from mono.

“We made fewer errors and had great offense from the middle,” said Windsor coach Lori Bennett.

Windsor had 24 kills in the 2-game set as Paige Woolard, Katie Hostetter, Bennett, and Mercedez Austin all figured into the front line attack and Olivia Williamson dished another 20+ match. The Devil defense was also key, balancing out 22 digs in a team effort.

Windsor notched a convincing, 25-19, win in game 1 on Tuesday. Instead of having a let down in game 2, the Devils fended off a desperate Rider comeback, showing grit down the stretch and taking game 2 in OT, 26-24.

Woolard and Hostetter led the attack with 10 kills, each, as Williamson fed the front line with 21 assists.

Windsor advanced to the regional championship against top-seeded Arthur. The Devil relish the opportunity, as they were lost a very game challenge to the Knights in the final match of the regular season, without Bennett, being out-scored by just three points in a 3-game blow-by-blow marathon, 26-24, 23-25, 25-22.

Windsor played a whale of a match without Bennett. Hitters Paige Woolard and Katie Hostetter swung for a season-high 16 and 15 kills, respectively, in a valiant performance against the 23-2 Knights. Woolard added four blocks to record 20 net points in a match an area season-high. Setter Olivia Williamson also dished a season-high 24 assists in that match.

Arthur defeated Atwood-Hammond in the other regional semifinal, 25-23, 25-19.

Windsor plays Arthur (25-3) at 7 p.m. at Arcola.
