Gordon's 8th victory at Martinsville

Jeff Gordon proved his additional to the chase, was deserved, by winning for the first time this season at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday. For Gordon it was his eight win at the speedway, tying Jimmie Johnson for the most among active drivers.

More importantly, Gordon pulls into third place with three races to go and just 27 points behind the leaders.

Those leaders are Johnson and Matt Kenseth who finished second on the day. Kenseth went into the race with as many top 10 finishes as Johnson had wins at Martinsville. However, Kenseth bested Johnson on this day, as Johnson came home in fifth place. This has the two knotted up at the top of the standings.

Kenseth a race high 202 laps on the day and was leading with 77 laps to go. Gordon was in third, but methodically made his move towards the front and stalked Kenseth for many laps, before overtaking him with 21 to go.

Clint Bowyer would have his best finish of the chase in third, moving him up to 6th place. Kevin Harvick finished 6th and is now 28 behind the leaders in fourth place.

*** Truex deal almost done ***

It sill looks like the Martin Truex Jr. to Furniture Row Racing deal will finish in the next week or so. They have just a couple things to clear up.

Jeff Burton, claims to have a deal done but can not announce it yet.

Ken Schrader has announced that he will retire after the Homestead race this year from Sprint Cup.

Brian Vickers announced that he plans to return to the car in 2014 and Tony Stewart is on pace to be back in the car at Daytona next year as well.

*** Texas on deck ***

Three races to go, and next up is Texas where Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson are two of the best out there. I am going to go with Kenseth, but see both in the top 5, if not 1-2. Looking for an outsider this week, Denny Hamlin runs well and a real dark horse could be Marcos Ambrose, who runs the 1.5 mile tracks well. Phoenix is next week, followed by the season finally at Homestead.
