---- — Shelby County Jr. Legion baseball took their final bow of the summer on Monday, as they played catch up to Clark County Legion and never quite could, 11-9.
Shelby County out-hit Clark County 9 to 7. Clark gave out 11 walks and had four errors. Shelby only gave out five walks, but booted the ball six times. The problem for Shelby was Clark got their runs in bunches and kept the pressure on Shelby to come back.
Clark County jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half inning and set the tone. Two of just five walks issued by Shelby County pitchers, a single, and three of the six Shelby errors in the game, played a part.
Shelby had their lead-off man at 3rd in the 1st, but couldn’t get him home. They started catching up and got on the board in the 2nd.
Tristan Warner drew a lead-off walk and went to 2nd on an error. Trevor Easton, the Shelby starting pitcher, singled with one out. Mark Jones lifted a sacrifice fly, scoring Warner.
Josh Overbeck doubled and drove Easton in. Derek Moschenrose followed with an RBI-single, making it a 1-run ball game after two innings, 4-3.
Clark made it a 2-run game with a run in the 3rd, off a pair of doubles, 5-3. Shelby responded and got that run back. Nic Hutchinson led off with a single and, with two outs, Warner singled Hutchinson in.
Tyler Kemper singled and Easton walked. With the bases loaded and a chance to claim the lead, a ground out ended the opportunity.
It was still a 1-run game in the top of the 5th, 5-4, when Clark put on another rally. A base hit, a walk, an error, and two more singles, made it 7-4. With two outs, a 2-run single made it 9-4.
Shelby would have to catch up again, quickly. Before they could, Clark scored again in the 6th. Back-to-back Shelby errors scored a run. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases. Another hit batter forced in a run and made it 11-4.
In the bottom of the 6th, Shelby faced an uphill battle, but they got a leg up from several walks. With one out, Jones walked and Overbeck walked. Jones scored on a wild pitch. With two outs, Hutchinson walked and Overbeck scored on a balk, 11-7.
Ohnesorge walked and Clark got out the hook for their pitcher. Jacob Kramer greeted the new pitcher with a RBI-single. He went to 2nd on the overthrow and Hutchinson scored on an error, 11-8. A runner was out trying to steal and ended the rally.
In the 7th, Mark Jones came on to pitch for Shelby to stop the bleeding and give Shelby a final chance. Jones threw out the first batter from the mound. Overbeck threw out the next batter on a ground ball to short. Jones rang up the last batter on a 2-2 pitch.
Shelby was down three to start the bottom of the 7th. Warner led off with a walk and Easton walked with one out. A fielder’s choice left two men on with two outs. Overbeck walked to bring the winning run to the plate with the bases loaded.
Warner scored on a wild pitch, 11-9. The next batter grounded out to end the comeback attempt two runs short.
