Guns battle Hoses, raise $2,300

It was Guns v. Hoses again. Result...Guns win again and $2300 was raised to help those with breast cancer.

“It was a good event and everyone was a good sport,” said firefighter Tanner Thompson. “It was a more competitive game. The crowd was a little bigger than last year. We raised over $2300, mostly from donations at the door.”

Last year, the Shelbyville Fire Department (Hoses) took on the Shelbyville Police Department and Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies (Guns). The Guns ran away with the game, but more importantly, the charity event raised $2000 for the D.A.R.E. Program.

On Saturday night, the 2nd Annual Guns and Hoses Charity Game took place in the Shelbyville High School Gym. It was a festive event beginning with an inter-squad scrimmage between the 3rd/4th grade Rams. Prior to the Guns and Hoses game concessions were sold, as well as commemorative breast cancer T-shirts and bracelets. There was also a half-court shot contest.

Then the two teams took the floor for a competitive, but friendly game. This year, the Shelbyville Fire Department had members of the Windsor and Tower Hill Fire Departments to fill out their roster. The game was a lot closer. The Guns took an early lead, but by half-time the Hoses had closed the gap to just two points. The Hoses knotted the game in the 3rd quarter, but at the closing buzzer the Guns were able to finish with a 10-point victory.

The Guns were lead by Chad Brachbill, scoring most of his points around the bucket, Jesse Brandt hitting from the arc, with as many as six 3-pointers, and Eric Bennett scoring from the outside. The Hoses were kept close in the 1st half by the 3-point assault of Tanner Thompson, half a dozen on the night. Jeremy Logan joined the 3-point party as a Hose leader. Brent Welton started to hit from distance in the 2nd half and get to the bucket to also help lead the Hoses.
