Athlete of the Week

The Daily Union Athletes of the Week used speed and power to make their mark.

Amanda McClain, super sophomore track star from Sullivan-Okaw Valley, uses her speed to show she’s the best in the Shelby Area. On Friday, McClain, part of the reigning state champion 4x2 relay team, took on some of the best from beyond the Shelbyville area and shined.

On Friday at the Shelby Girls Open, McClain won three individual events, more than any other star athlete at the event. McClain won one of her signature events, the 400 meter dash (58.54), winning by over two seconds.

McClain also won the 200 meter dash (25.99), winning by over half a second. McClain started the day by winning the long jump, jumping 17 feet and a half inch. She won that event by over nine inches.

McClain was also part of the 2nd place 4x2 SOV relay (1:48.8). McClain accounted for 32 points of the 58-point SOV total, giving them a team 3rd place in the meet.

Hayden Cole, junior diamond man for Windsor/Stew-Stras baseball, used his power to help his co-op team.

Against Arcola on Thursday, W/SS was up 7-1, when Cole came to the plate a delivered a home run, breaking the Riders’ back. Cole went 3-for-3, with a run, and four RBIs. On Against Casey on Friday, Cole was still hot at the plate, hitting 2-for-3, with a run, and four more RBIs.

On Saturday in a double header against Central A&M, Cole went deep again. Cole went 2-for-5 in the two games with two runs and three more RBIs. He went 1-for-2 in game 1, with a run, and 3 RBIs, launching a home run that put W/SS up 4-0 and ensured the win. He was 1-for-3 with a run in a game 2 1-run loss.
