Relay for Life gears up for main event Aug. 1-2

Teams are working hard for the upcoming Relay for Life of Shelby County.

The Relay is set for August 1-2 in Forest Park with the theme “Pack the Park to Finish the Fight”.

Relay for Life is a fundraising event for the American Cancer Society with events happening throughout the country. The overnight event symbolizes a cancer patient’s journey from diagnosis to survivorship or loss of the battle. Survivors are celebrated; victims are remembered; caregivers are honored.

Eleven teams are participating in the event, but Kathy Storm, chairperson for Shelby County, notes that it is not too late to register a team.

“We want to see the park filled with teams and people from the county out supporting the teams. This is not just a Shelbyville event - it is a Shelby County event,” Storm said.

The Survivors’ dinner will be held at 5 p.m. prior to the start of the main Relay event. Survivors need to contact Debbie Hammond at 774-1345 or email tdhamm72@consolidated.net to register for the dinner. Those survivors with new 9-1-1 addresses also need to contact Hammond.

Survivors will also be celebrated at the beginning of the event with a special lap for them and their caregivers.

Luminaria to remember loved ones lost to cancer or to support cancer patients are also available for purchase. Forms are available online at www.relayforlife.org/shelbyil, by contacting Paula Chasteen at 217-273-0949, or may be purchased at the event before 8 p.m. August 1. The luminaria ceremony will be held at 9 p.m.

This year’s fundraising goal is $53,000. Last year the Relay raised $50,693 for the American Cancer Society. So far this year, more than $21,000 has been raised. Teams continue to do fundraising events. Donations may be made to a team, team member, or to the event in general at www.relayforlife.org/shelbyil.

There will be activities continuing during the evening for the general public to enjoy including music, children’s corner, midnight swim. Teams will continue to walk the track throughout the night to sunrise.
