Lakers home meet success

The Shelbyville Laker swim team hosted a home meet and celebrated success for Shelbyville kids who swim for the Lakers and the Sullivan Blue Dolphins.

“We swam Crystal Lake and also invited Sullivan Blue Dolphins to compete too,” said Laker coach Nicole Hendry. “It was really fun since some of the swimmers who started with the Lakers and now swim year round with SBD came to compete. The meet went fast and smooth with the help of our parent volunteers.

“This sport requires a lot of volunteers, especially for our home meets. Our parents have worked hard this summer and the swimmers, I think, have more fun knowing their parents are involved too.”

Madison Kerr (10&U) scored a 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd. Kerr won the 50 meter breaststroke (1:01.37), was 2nd in the 50 meter freestyle (45.94), and 3rd in the 100 meter individual medley (2:10.60).

“My eye has been on Madison Kerr this season,” Coach Hendry said. “She has been working really hard and her times are proving her determination to be a star. I’ve also noticed Eddie Clearwater’s sportsmanship this season. Not only is he making great times but he has been working with our 5 year-olds during practice. He has really shown a great example of how to be a mentor and role model for our new and young athletes.”

Clearwater (12&U) placed 2nd in the 100 IM (2:11.05), was 3rd in the 50 meter freestyle (43.89), and 6th in the 50-meter breaststroke (1:10.57).

“Saturday was a special day for us,”Hendry said. “We celebrated Hampton Petska’s 6th birthday.”

Petska and his teammates won the 8&U 100 medley relay (Nash Knearem, Gatlin Knearem, Isaac Chambers, Petska) 2:49.00. He also placed 4th in the 25 meter freestyle (39.06), 4th in the 25 meter backstroke (52.0), and 5th in the 25 meter butterfly (52.0).

Braxton Vice (14&U) won the 50 meter butterfly (40.35), was 2nd in the 50 meter freestyle (34.27) and 2nd in the 50 meter breaststroke (42.53).
