Checkin’ Out Shelbyville

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Livestock of all kinds are not unusual sights in rural areas of Shelby County, but one animal left many people surprised as it roamed the streets of Shelbyville.

A Hereford cow escaped its trailer Tuesday morning created a small challenge for city police officers in wrangling the critter.

Officer Brad Getz spotted the bovine at North Chestnut and Fourth and, using his vehicle, kept the animal from wandering out onto the roadway. Eventually, she turned onto Morgan, heading back toward Main.

“She didn’t like it and nudged the car, but kept right on walking,” Getz said. “I didn’t have a lasso or anything and didn’t know what else to do.”

The owner of the trailer arrived and with the help of a few people coaxed the cow back into the trailer and continued on their way.

“It was pretty uneventful, but comical,” Getz said.
