---- — Despite ending their season in the Auburn Regional with a 1st-round loss to Meridian, the Shelbyville Rams (16-12) had one of the best seasons in recent school history.

Shelby never fell below .500 all season. They started out 3-1 when they beat Okaw Valley. They went to 6-3 when they beat Stew-Stras. They went to 8-4 when they beat St. Anthony.

The Rams went to 10-5 when they beat Tuscola. They went to 12-6 when they beat Argenta. They went to 14-8 when they beat Warrensburg in the OVC tourney. They went to 16-10 when they had a huge upset win on Sr. Night against St. Teresa. The Ram defense held late and Nate Standerfer made two 3-pointers in the final minute for the win.

Shelby had a distinct home-court advantage in these close games. They were 7-2 at home, 3-4 away, and 6-6 on neutral floors.

They played a lot of close games, in part due to their defense, which kept opponents’ scores low. They Rams outscored their opponents by just 38 points total over 28 games.

Shelby scored an average of 49 points per game with 28.2 rebounds, 12.8 assists per game, 5.9 steals per game, and 2.7 blocks per game.

Of their 75 blocked shots, senior center Brody Bence had 57, 76% of the team blocks.

Bence was the Rams’ leading scorer with 425 points (12.5 p/g). He shot 51% from the field, 78% from the line. He grabbed 182 rebounds, 2 boards less than their leading rebounder, senior forward Tucker Schwengel. Schwengel also led the team in steals with 38.

Shelby’s top 3-point shooter was senior Nate Standerfer with 290 points, 192 of those from 64 treys (30%). He had more than twice as many 3’s as he did 2’s. He shot 68% from the line. Jake Keown was a pure point guard, leading the Rams with 112 assists. Standerfer and Spencer Shadwell followed, dishing 57 assists, each.
