Daily Union Male Winter Athlete of the Year

The Daily Union Winter Athletes of the Year are a pair of singularly standout scorers who led their teams to winning seasons. They are Cowden-Herrick’s senior forward Luke Moore and Shelbyville’s senior center Brody Bence.

Moore scored his 1000th career point, while leading the Hornets to a 16-11 season. He scored 463 points this season (17.1 ppg) and grabbed 286 boards (10.2 rpg) to average a double-double.

Moore scored 30% of the teams’ points, shooting 42% from the floor and 68% from the foul line. Moore struck 41 times from the arc. He snared 212 defensive boards and was a 40/40 man in steals and assists. He had 44 steals and 40 assists.

Moore had eight games with 20 points or more with a high of 39 points against Brownstown, shooting 54%, with four 3-pointers. He scored 25 points v. Ramsey, shooting 53%. He scored 25 points v. Neoga, shooting 47% with three 3-pointers.

Moore scored 24 points v. BC, shooting 47% with four 3’s. He scored 22 v. C.O.R. with 14 boards, shooting 47% with two treys. He had 21 points v. St. Elmo and v. Ramsey, shooting 58% and 54%. He score 20 points v. St. Anthony in an upset win, shooting 54% with 10 boards.

Bence (6’7”) used his whole arsenal to lead the Rams to a 16-12 season. He scored 425 points, inside the paint, along the baseline and outside the arc.

He scored 15.2 points per game and grabbed 182 rebounds (6.5 rpg).

He scored 31% of the team’s points, shooting 51% from the floor and 78% from the free throw line. He also made 18 3-pointers.

Bence was also an eraser on defense, blocking 57 shots this season. He cleaned the defensive glass 126 times. He also dished out 37 assists.

Bence had six games with 20 points or more and had five game shooting over 60%.

His season-high was 32 points against Neoga, shooting 74%. He had 18 against Stew-Stras, shooting 77%. He had 24 points against Maroa, shooting 75%.

He scored 23 points v. Meridian, shooting 91%. He had 23 points v. A&M, shooting 64%.

Luke Moore is the son of Todd and Rebecca Moore of Cowden. Brody Bence is the son of Tim and Denise Bence of Shelbyville.
