Road water causes multi-vehicle accident

Shelbyville Daily Union

---- — At 4:10 p.m. on June 22, members of the Stewardson Fire Department responded to a multi-vehicle accident on Illinois Route 32 at the Shelby and Effingham County line.

Upon arrival, firefighters found multiple northbound vehicles involved in a rear-end collision 1/10th mile north of the Effingham County line. The vehicles sustained varied extent of damage, with the final vehicle being an estimated total loss.

No injuries were reported at the scene, but all persons involved in the accident were examined by Stewardson Ambulance personnel as a precaution. No information on those involved in the accident is available because minors were involved in the collision.

The suspected cause of the accident was due to water over the roadway. Firefighters remained on scene for over an hour and a half and were assisted by the Stewardson Ambulance Service, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, and the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office at the scene.

The Stewardson Fire Department would like to remind all drivers to be cautious when driving during rapid heavy rains. Many area roadways can experience flash flooding during rainfall and extra caution, slower travel speeds, and greater following distances can decrease the probability of having an accident.

Drivers are also reminded that Illinois requires drivers to operate headlights when weather conditions require the use of windshield wipers, and that wireless phones are prohibited within 500 feet of an emergency scene.
