Shelbyville soldier part of Easter miracle

(Continued)

CPT James Torrence, 1SG Dowland's commanding officer, was called to the scene to assist with translations.

"1SG Dowland called me on Sunday 20APR14 with excitement, trepidation, and happiness and told me he just helped to revive a young boy who had fallen into the river," Torrence said. "I jumped into my car and drove to the scene to see my battle buddy and to assist with any translations if necessary. When I arrived he was being lauded by the police for his bravery."

"1SG Dowland was at the playground with his wife and children when he saw a child pulled from the lagoon in the park who had been drowning. He watched the child's father perform CPR for roughly 30 seconds before he said "Il est morts" which means "he is dead" in french. 1SG Dowland realized that the father had been performing CPR incorrectly and immediately ran to the child and performed CPR for 3-4 minutes until the child started to get color back in his skin, breathe, and spit up water. He was being congratulated in french by all the families that were at the park."

"He is a true hero and the epitome of the warrior ethos espoused by the American military. His dedication to helping others extended beyond those in uniform and resulted in a life being saved. I am proud to serve with 1SG Dowland and am even more proud of his efforts on Easter."
