Back in the Win Column

---- — After a string of tough losses, Shelbyville Moulton returned home, Monday, and overcame St. Elmo/Brownstown to get back in the win column, 16-13.

A host of runs were scored in the 1st , 2nd, and 3rd innings by both teams. They traded 7-run innings, but St. Elmo lead after three innings, 12-10. From that point St. Elmo ran out of ammo, while the Rams pulled away, out-scoring the visitors 6-1 in the final three and a half innings.

Parkinson and Viramentos led off for St. Elmo in the 1st with singles and both scored. But Kayla McGabe rang up three batters after the first two singles and got out of the inning, down 2-0. Shelby then broke out.

Hannah Kemp led off the Ram 1st with a double, followed by Blair Rodman's single and Sydney Trainor drawing a walk. After a fielder's choice Savannah Marty reached on a dropped 3rd strike. Kendyll Dunaway hit an RBI single. With two outs, Isabel Logue walked and Jayde Fox singled. Up 5-2, Kemp, Rodman, and Trainor walked, forcing in two more runs.

St. Elmo answered the Shelby 7-run rally with one of their own in the 2nd. McCabe struck out the first batter, but catcher interference put a runner on. Two walks and a fielder's choice were followed by an RBI single. A single, a hit batter and a walk were followed by another McCabe strikeout. Catcher interference and a walk made it 9-7 St. Elmo, before McCabe rang up the last batter in the 2nd.

Shelby had Dunaway and Logue draw walks in the 2nd and Fox was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kemp then came through with an RBI single. Rodman then walked to force in another run and tie the score, 9-9.

St. Elmo was still hot and got the first three batters on in the 3rd on a walk and back-to-back singles. An error and a ground out made it 12-9 ST. Elmo, before McCabe threw another K to end the at bat.

Shelby got one run back in the bottom of the inning. McCabe and Marty led off with walks. Maggie Furr reached on an error and Logue walked, 12-10 St. Elmo

Finally in the 4th, Shelby held St. Elmo scoreless and gave themselves a chance to put it in passing gear. Rodman walked, Trainor reached on an error and McCabe hit her second home run of the year to put Shelby up, 13-12.

With two outs in the 5th, an error, a single, a walk and catcher interference forced a St. Elmo run in, tying the score again, 13-13. McCabe rang up the next batter for her 10th strikeout of the game and got out of the inning.

Shelby got the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 5th. Logue walked again and Fox reached on an error. Kemp walked, Rodman hit into a fielder's choice and Logue was forced out at the plate. With two outs, McCabe reached on an error and sent a run home, putting Shelby up 14-13.

McCabe gave up a single in the 6th, but then rang up her 11th victim. Shelby got insurance runs in the 7th.

Dunaway led off with a walk and Brianna Reed singled. They both advanced on a passed ball. Amber Rezinas walked and Mackenzie Perry reached on a fielder's choice and driving in a run, 15-13. Kemp singled again and drove in the final run, 16-13.

St. Elmo was down to their last at bat. McCabe retired all three batters and notched the win. She finished the game allowing nine hits, six walks and two hit batters, striking out 11.

Shelby was out-hit 9 to 8, but St. Elmo gave up 15 walks, while Shelby gave up nine walks.

Kemp led the Rams in hitting, going 3-for-4 with a double, a run, and two RBIs. McCabe had the big hit, a 3-run homer, reaching base four times and scoring three times.

Shelby was to host Effingham on Tuesday, then travel to Charleston on Thursday, before hosting Argenta on Saturday at 9 a.m.
