---- — Two would-be gun thieves were quickly caught while trying to flee a Shelbyville gun shop Thursday morning.

Shelbyville police were waiting in the alley behind Shelbyville Firearms after a silent alarm was sounded when the thieves broke the front door glass and entered the store.

The incident happened about 3:30 a.m. according to Shelbyville Police Department report.

“A juvenile and an adult were arrested by Shelbyville Police while attempting to leave the scene of a burglary to Shelbyville Firearms. The stolen firearms were recovered. Both suspects are being held at the Shelby County jail pending formal charges expected to be filed by Friday,” said Shelbyville Police Chief David Tallman.

Store owner Loren Batson said it appeared the suspects used a brick to break the front door glass. They attempted to take two long guns, which were recovered at the scene.

“In 18 years this is the first break in I’ve had,” Batson said.

Names are being withheld until formal charges are filed, according to Shelby County State’s Attorney Gina Vonderheide.
