Hornet Volleyball Starts 2-0

Cowden-Herrick doesn’t have a lot of numbers this year on their volleyball squads, but they have still started the 2013 campaign 2-0. They beat Teutopolis on Tuesday, 25-20, 13-25, 25-14, and beat Ramsey on Thursday, 18-25, 25-13, 25-10.

The Teutopolis game was a see-saw battle. C-H got the first game, Teutopolis counter-punched in game 2, but the Hornets got on a roll in game 3 for the win.

Teutopolis out-hit the Hornets on kills, 19 to 11, and had one more ace than the Hornets. T’town had four blocks to C-H’s three. Nevertheless, the Hornets pulled together as a team to get the win.

C-H shared their 11 kills among six different hitters, while Jensyn Morrison rose for three blocks to score 5 net points. Ariel Heiserman and Hannah Wehrle shared 9 assists towards 11 kills, five and four, respectively. C-H also shared 12 digs among six different players. The Ramsey match also went three games, but only because the Hornets started slow. Once they got warmed up they were red hot, especially from the service line, fueling blowouts in game 2 and 3. C-H lost game 1, 25-18. However, they ran away with game 2 and game 3, 25-13, 25-10.

Ashley Davis and Hannah Wehrle both delivered 10 aces. Wehrle served 20 points and Davis served 18. Jensyn Morrison added two aces. Twenty-two aces in a varsity match is a rare performance.

The Hornets swung for 13 kills, but only needed six assists, six from Wehrle. Skyscraper Jensyn Morrison not only swung for five kills, but blocked three more shots, for eight net points. Acacia Kresin added four kills. Again, six different players combined for nine team digs.
