Death by jump shot

---- — Shelbyville’s quick trigger at the 3-point arc was an addiction that debilitated its production in the 1st half and couldn’t be kicked even in the 2nd half.

Second half fouls gave aid and comfort to the enemy. Okaw Valley used free shots as a foundation to pull away in a Timberwolf victory on Friday, 68-60.

Okaw Valley only shot 41.5% from the field, but they made 20-of-32 free throws, a 15-point edge at the line.

The Rams put up 27 3-point shots and made just five (18%). By contrast, they shot 34 2-point shots and made 20. They were gangbusters inside (58%), but chose to take 44% of their shots from the arc and missed 22 of them in an 8-point loss.

Okaw Valley shot just 42.5% inside (20-of-47). Okaw’s salvation was foul shooting. They were in the bonus the last 10:00 of the game and cashed in. Okaw was 19-of-30 in the 2nd half. Okaw was 12-of-18 in the 4th quarter. Shelbyville was 2-of-2 in the 2nd half.

Shelbyville never made it into the bonus. Setttling for 3-pointers does not draw fouls or get you to the line.

Shelby took an early lead, but then Okaw Valley was able to close to within two points at the half, 23-21.

Game-high scorer Peyton Hagerman of Okaw finally got on the board in the 2nd period, like a whirling dervish, scoring a handful of times and getting warmed up. Just before the half, Shelby’s Spencer Shadwell drove the lane, scored and converted the 3-point play for a Ram lead at the break, 23-21.

Shelby shot 31% in the 1st half, just 2 of 13 (15%) from the arc, but 7-of-16 inside (43.7%). Okaw shot 32% in the 1st half, trailing by two.

Aside from Okaw drawing fouls, play in the 3rd went back and forth. Joe Jeffers joined Hagerman in making a push. Speedy Colton Sroka got the ball to the Okaw end and stopped and popped for two to tie as the clock expired in the 3rd, 40-40.

Okaw was still in the bonus and was headed for the super bonus and a leg up towards the win. Hagerman teed up a splash from the arc and captured the Okaw lead with 6:25 left, 45-43. Okaw would not trail again.

Devon Still kept driving, picking up a 2 and a foul, and converting for a 3-point lead, 48-45, and begin a 16-4 Okaw run. Hagerman scored on a give and go and a 10-point lead with 2:00 left, 59-49. Shelby missed another three and, with 1:21 left in the game, Shelby started to foul to stop the clock. Hagerman was fouled for the super bonus and made both shots to cap the 16-4 run, 61-49.

Shelby kept trying to will their way back in it, but Okaw at the free throw line stood in the way. Shadwell drove end to end, unhindered, and scored with four seconds left to no effect, as the game ended, 68-60.
