SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
A fire Wednesday afternoon left a rural Tower Hill family homeless.
The two-story home located north of Tower Hill on 900E belonged to Matt and Ashley Florey and their three children. Matt was the only one home at the time of the fire.
"Matt was working in the machine shed when he noticed the fire at the back end of the house," said Tower Hill fire chief Randy Kay. Kay said he believed the fire started possibly in the laundry room. The cause remains undetermined.
Strong winds drove the fire through the rest of the house.
"The wind was very much a factor with the house sitting on top of the hill. It hampered us quite a bit," Kay said.
The fire was reported at 1:20 p.m. and firefighters remained on the scene until 5:15 p.m.
The Tower Hill Fire Department was aided by Pana, Shelbyville, Assumption, Herrick, and Oconee departments.
"We are very thankful for all the mutual aid we received," Kay said.
