Shelby softball season summary

---- — Shelbyville High School softball (17-7), the Tuscola 2A Regional Champions, finished the season in the sectional semifinal, hitting the ball hard, but right at Carlyle, while Ram ace Grace Moll struck out Carlyle 18 times. Carlyle got their three runs in one inning and prevailed.

The 2013 season saw the end of the career of the greatest softball pitcher in school history, all-stater Grace Moll. Moll struck out more than 1000 batters in her four years and led the 2011 Rams to 2nd in the State. Moll is headed to Arkansas to pitch next year in the powerful SEC Conference.

She finished her career leading a host of underclassmen, on the mound and at the plate.

Moll went 12-4, throwing 212 strikeouts in 106 innings. Her ERA was just 0.99 with 0.83 walks/hits per innings pitched. She gave up just 15 earned runs in 106 innings and averaged 14 Ks per 7 innings pitched.

Moll also led the Ram hit crew in 9 hitting categories. She led the team with a.556 batting average, a .556 on base percentage and an .842 slugging percentage. She also led the team with 42 hits, 26 singles, nine double and 32 runs scored. She also led in fewest strikeouts. She struck out just four times in 83 at bats, striking out just once per every 20.75 at bats.

Sophomore Madison Boone was the Ram slugger. Boone launched eight home runs and a team-high 18 extra-base hits, with eight doubles and two triples. Boone drove in a team-high 33 runs. She scored 31 runs, one less than Moll. She led the team in getting hit by a pitch (5 times).

Boone’s slugging percentage was .824, with a batting average of .380 and an on base percentage of .441. Boone struck out only eight times in a team high 92 at bats. She struck out just once every 11.5 at bats.

Junior Brandy Smith hit .360, with a .427 on base percentage and a .600 slugging percentage. She had 31 hits in 86 at bats, with three home runs, including one of the first grand slams of the season. She had 31 hits and six doubles.

Senior Abbie Watton, headed to pitch at Benedictine University in Springfield, hit .352, with a .515 on base percentage and a .477 slugging percentage. She also was hit a team-high five times. And walked 14 times.

Watton also went 6-4 as a pitcher, throwing 45 strikeouts in 54 innings with an ERA of 3.76.

Sophomore Kayla Brachbill hit .345, with an on base percentage of .412 and a .558 slugging percentage, tying the team-high in doubles (9). She had 12 extra-base hits, adding two triples and a home run. Brachbill struck out just once every 7.6 at bats.

Sophomore Jensen Cloe settled into the lead-off spot and also finished the season as the catcher after one left the team and two more suffered injuries. Cloe hit .333. She drew 15 walks and posted a .427 on base percentage and a .466 slugging percentage. She drove in 16 runs and scored 19. She had six doubles, a triple and a home run in the regional championship win.

Those top six batters lifted the Rams to a .332 team batting average, with a team on base percentage of .423 and a .527 slugging percentage. They accounted for all 18 home runs, 9 of 12 triples, and 42 of the 53 doubles.

Two more batters almost hit .300. Freshman Courtney Williams hit .298 with a .483 on base percentage. She walked a team-high 16 times. And had 14 hits, scoring 20 times.

Rachel Fox hit .295 and had a slugging percentage of .451. She drove in 17 runs and scored 15. She hit 10 extra-base hits, seven doubles and three triples.

The Shelbyville softball team was coached by Josh Maxwell will have team awards next week.
